Troubleshooting

Common launcher problems, sensible first steps

Public guidance from Microsoft support and community reports. These are starting points for the official Minecraft Launcher on Windows, macOS, and Linux—not guaranteed fixes for every setup. If you have not installed yet, start with the official download page and install walkthrough.

Windows

Launcher won't open

After a Windows update, the launcher may fail to start because of corrupted cache, broken Gaming Services, or a Store registration issue. You might see nothing happen when you click the icon, or the splash screen closes immediately.

Try first: Settings → Apps → Installed apps → Minecraft Launcher → Advanced options → Repair. Then run wsreset.exe from the Start menu, restart your PC, and open the launcher again.

If that fails: Reset Gaming Services (Settings → Apps → Gaming Services → Advanced options → Reset), sign out of the Xbox app and Microsoft Store, restart, and sign back in with the account that owns Minecraft.

All platforms

Blank or black window

The launcher window opens but stays empty or black. This is often tied to GPU acceleration, outdated graphics drivers, or conflicts with overlay software such as Discord or GeForce Experience.

Try first: Update your GPU driver from NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Close overlay apps, then relaunch the launcher.

If that fails: Add a --disableGPU launch flag in the launcher's installation settings, or temporarily disable hardware acceleration in Windows display settings and test again.

Game not available in your account

Windows cannot verify that the signed-in Microsoft account owns Minecraft or has an active Game Pass entitlement. The error often appears when the Store, Xbox app, and launcher are signed into different accounts.

Try first: Sign out of Microsoft Store and the Xbox app, restart your PC, then sign back in with the account that purchased the game or has Game Pass.

If that fails: Open account.microsoft.com/services and confirm Minecraft appears under your subscriptions or owned games before retrying.

Sign-in

Login never finishes

The Microsoft sign-in page may spin indefinitely or return you to the launcher without completing authentication. Common causes include account mismatch between Windows, Store, Xbox app, and the launcher, or incorrect system date and time.

Try first: Use the Microsoft sign-in helper to clear stale sessions. Confirm Windows date, time, and time zone are set to automatic.

If that fails: Sign out of every Microsoft app on the PC, reboot, sign in once with the owning account, then open the launcher and try again in a private browser window if prompted.

macOS

Error 9 on update

On macOS Sequoia 15 and later, the launcher updater may fail with error 9 because macOS blocks the app from modifying its own bundle without Full Disk Access permission.

Try first: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access → add Minecraft.app (or the launcher app), then quit and reopen the launcher to retry the update.

If that fails: Download a fresh .dmg from launcher.mojang.com, replace the app in Applications, and right-click → Open the first time to pass Gatekeeper.

Linux

Sign-in window crashes

The embedded Chromium (CEF) sign-in window may crash during OAuth, especially on KDE desktops without a working secret service or keyring. Flatpak and native .deb builds behave differently on some distributions.

Try first: On KDE, install and unlock kwallet or use GNOME Keyring. Ensure a desktop keyring is running before you open the launcher.

If that fails: Try the Flatpak build from Flathub, or follow the discussion on MCL-24681 for your desktop environment.
